Does Exercise Decrease Blood Sugar?
Exercise and other physical activity will lower your blood sugar for up to 24 hours. Finding something to do long term for fun like bike riding, swimming, dancing, whatever gets you moving that you enjoy multiple times a week will help lower your A1C over time.
When you exercise, your muscles use sugar (glucose) for energy. Regular physical activity also helps your body use insulin more efficiently.
These factors work together to lower your blood sugar level. The more strenuous your workout, the longer the effect lasts. But even light activities such as housework, gardening or being on your feet for extended periods can improve your blood sugar.
Become familiar with how your blood sugar responds to exercise. Checking your blood sugar level more often before and after exercise can help you see the benefits of activity. You also can use the results of your blood sugar checks to see how your body reacts to different activities. Understanding these patterns can help you prevent your blood sugar from going too high or too low.
