Strategies to follow to increase fiber consumption and decrease carbohydrate consumption.
To start with, fibers are actually a complex carbohydrates. In diabetes cases, the biggest focus is in simple sugar restrictions. Here are few advice I can give.
👉 Eat food, don't drink it (instead of drinking fruit juice, eat the fruit itself. When you juice the fruit you get rid of the fibers and probably many vitamins and minerals depending on how you juice them).
👉 Don't skip meals (I say this everyday)
👉 If you don't have any digestive tract disease switch your bread to wholebread, eat fruits and vegetables without peeling, that will provide you with both soluble and insoluble fibers.
👉 Drink plenty of water (3L minimum except if you have kidney issues).
👉 Don't combine too many starchy foods at a time because that will increase blood sugar.
👉 Take you snacks during the day not before sleep especially fruits (preferably not more than 2–3 exchanges)
👉 Remember, it is not only about quantity, it is also about quality.
I had a client who skipped her meals, ate more simple sugar than fibers and no physical activity. She ate late sugary dinner before sleep. She thought that eating less meals is the point, I explained that it is not. You can have 3 main meals, and 2–3 snacks focusing on the quantity, quality and the timing. (One of the things we learn in the Addys Antidiabetes Meal Plan Challenge).
