The Dawn Phenomenon
*THE DAWN PHENOMENON*
*What can you do?*
Mr Sam asked me....
"Addys, My blood sugar was 91 when I went to bed and exactly doubled to 182 when I got up. Do you have any comments?"
*MY ANSWER:*
What you are experiencing is the *“Dawn Phenomenon.”*
They are hormone driven processes that ready a person sleeping for action upon waking.
Adrenalin, cortisol, glucagon and growth hormone are secreted which among other things cause a conversion of glycogen stored in the liver to be converted into glucose.
This causes a rise in blood glucose levels.
In a person without diabetes this rise is countered effectively by the secretion of insulin to keep blood glucose levels in the normal range.
Type 1 diabetics make no insulin so there is that, and type 2 diabetics often have cells that are insulin resistant. That means the glucose cannot enter the cells, thus blood glucose levels rise.
Some strategies for reducing *Dawn Phenomenon* are
🌱 Eating a low carb evening meal earlier.
🌱 Eliminated night time snacking.
🌱 Doing some sort of brisk exercise.
🌱 Drinking the Addys Ikarian Brew Tea before bed time.
